Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that can be very unpleasant and sometimes lead to serious complications.
It’s uncommon in the UK because of the effectiveness of vaccination but there have been hundreds of cases in England, many of them in teenagers and young people attending summer festivals who missed out on their MMR vaccine in childhood.
Since October 2017 measles outbreaks have been reported in Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester and Surrey that are linked to ongoing large outbreaks in Europe.
Anyone planning to travel to Europe should make sure they are up to date with their MMR vaccines particularly if travelling to Romania, Italy and Germany.
